Australian Catholic University‘s International students who were successful in gaining the International Student Scholarship (ISS) in 2016 joined together to celebrate their achievements at a morning tea recently.

Morning teas were held in North Sydney and Melbourne.

The ISS is offered annually to up to 20 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Recipients receive the equivalent to one-half of the full-time fees for their course of study.

This scholarship is open to commencing International postgraduate and undergraduate students with outstanding academic merit of at least an average result of 80% in prior studies.

Master of Professional Accounting student Christalyn Lelis says receiving the ACU International Student Scholarship helped her out a lot and boosted her confidence.

“I’m aware of being blessed and the financial aspect allows me to focus on my studies,” she says.

“I feel a sense of gratitude and I want to give back – moving to Australia from a developing country it’s a big thing and mum was so proud.”

“It’s given me determination and courage and it’s very positive.”

Fellow Master of Professional Accounting student Amreen Banu from Bangladesh says receiving the ISS was a boost to her pride and allowed her to move to Australia with her husband.

“Mum and dad were so proud, and I’m looking forward to learning more and widening my vision,” she says.

“I thank ACU from the bottom of my heart and I feel very lucky to have received the scholarship.”

Bachelor of Nursing student Ayumi Tamang says she loves studying at ACU in Melbourne.

“ACU is not just a university in my belief but a second home to explore my dreams and hurdles towards it,” Ayumi says.

“I am very grateful to have received an International Student Scholarship in the university and be a part of its great program. I have really enjoyed my lectures and had a great time making international friends.”

Kazi Sajid Kabir, who is studying a Bachelor of Information Technology, says his parents were incredibly happy he was successful in attaining the ISS.

“The financial pressures are taken off and I can focus on studying and that is reflected in my grades – it’s all due to the scholarship,” Kazi says.

Master of Public Health student Shakiba Das says the International Student Scholarship is a stepping stone to her ambitions in the field of public health.

“Getting the opportunity to study a Master of Public Health at ACU is a dream come true for me,” she says.

“Putting the first steps on the streets on Melbourne on July 23, 2016 is just the beginning in the fulfillment of my long cherished dreams.”

Master of Information Technology student Nikola Kucerova says she joined student clubs on campus which helped her meet new people, make friends and improve her communication skills.

“There are many international students in Sydney so I was able to make friends from countries all over the world. Everyone is nice and friendly which makes settling in a lot easier.”

Master of Commerce/Master of Business Administration (Marketing) student Seavmeng Hun says the scholarship was a huge help to him and his family in Cambodia.

Master of Professional Accounting student Pooja Guatam says Australia has always been her first choice of country to study abroad and ACU met all her requirements to be her chosen university.

“The scholarship they offer for academically sound students is really appreciated,” she says.

“It’s helped me a lot and my parents were so shocked and proud that I was the only person in my village that received a scholarship. I feel very lucky and it has enhanced my confidence and it’s such a positive change. I don’t have to focus on work – I can focus on my studies.”

The Nepalese student says she recommends ACU to many of her friends because it’s the best platform for those who want the achieve their degree in a very friendly and natural environment.

“ACU has been organising many kinds of workshop and seminars for the international students which is helping so many students like me to cope with a new environment.”

“Being a developing country it takes half the burden off my family and means I can focus on my studies rather than working and my family are very proud.”

“To study abroad with a scholarship means a lot to every one and it gives value to my resume when I go back home.”
